Tankwa 2016

In July 2016 some of our family visited Tankwa Karoo National Park in Ceres district. It was still winter, but we were so blessed and happy to find these semi desert plains covered with carpets of bright wildflowers!

Woodwork screws

These old woodwork screws remind me that one of my high school subjects was woodwork. It was about theory, drawing, but mostly about making something with wood. Maybe one can still buy these classical woodwork screws?  The last time I bought screws in a hardware store I did not see any. Depth on a flat surface

People with normal eyesight see the world around them in 3 dimensions. This helps us to play with a ball and drive safely. It makes the world we see so beautiful! A camera "sees" the world in 2 dimensions - as if on a flat surface. Fortunately there are many ways to create the perception of depth in a photo.  Looking back, I notice that in recent months I have posted many photos that lack a perception of depth.  The photos of this post bring some correction. A feather

Wildflowers at Hermanus

The wildflowers of the Western Cape become a tourist attraction when fields are covered with flowers after a good raining season. What a joy to drive through landscapes of flowers! There is also joy in following trails and pay attention to individual flowers. These were taken during a lovely walk with friends in the hills of Hermanus. Leucospermum cordifolium (Red pincushion-protea) Berzelia lanuginosa (common button bush). Digital Electronics

Following up on a previous post on Analogue Electronics ( https://ndt-photoblog.blogspot.com/2023/11/analogue-electronics.html ) I found a few discarded digital boards.  Compared to the 3-dimensional impression of  the analogue board these boards look almost 2-dimensional.  They are at a much smaller scale. On closer look, they have fascinating patterns. A remote farm

A little past halfway from Ceres on the gravel road (R567) toward Sutherland there is a turnoff to the farm Jakkalshok. This part of the Karoo does not receive enough rain to sustain permanent farming. It is in a winter rainfall area and summers can be long, dry and hot. In winter it can be very cold, but beautiful, quiet and serene. A place to walk the open spaces and pay attention to the beauty of nature at your feet. Click on the images to view them in full.  The bush with flowers is probably Sarcocaulon crassicaule and the lichen is probably Xanthoparmelia. Blue

Warm colours (red, orange and yellow) are preferred by many photographers. One should guard against the overbearing presence of blue that might ruin a photo, some say. Therefore the advice to take advantage of the "golden hour", when colours before sunset and after sunrise are richer and softer.  It took me long to appreciate the "blue hour" (before sunrise and after sunset), when colder and calmer blue hues have their own magic. Then there are the vibrant blues of a sunny day, while the ocean has its own variety of beautiful blues.
