Flowers of the Sacred Bamboo

Image
A first impression of the Sacred Bamboo (Nandina domestica / Heilige Bamboes) is its bunches of red berries and its foliage that turns into beautiful autumn colours. The bunches of red berries are preceded by tiny white flowers with golden anthers at the tips of branches. The flowers are not as eye-catching as the berries, but on closer inspection they are quite something! Paternoster beach

Image
Paternoster was a traditional fishing village on the West Coast known for its beautiful beaches and peaceful and romantic atmosphere.  It has become a popular holiday destination where the endless sandy beaches can be enjoyed while fishermen still head out in colourful traditional wooden boats to catch snoek in winter and crayfish in summer.  Photos (taken 2015): Fishermen houses; waiting for his master to return; at the end of the day. Flowers everywhere

Image
Six months after our visit to Ireland an impression that still lingers, is all the containers with flowers that decorated many different places.   Although it was a dry summer, they were so beautiful. Sea birds at Gansbaai

Image
The fishing harbour of Gansbaai attracts many birds to the nearby rocky coastline, where I took these photos. The  Hartlaub's gull is smaller than other gulls.  Although it is a relatively rare species, they breed in large colonies in the Cape Town area. The second and third photos are probably Sandwich Terns (Grootsterretjie).  They breed in very dense colonies on coasts and islands.
